"Scar tissue" is loosely defined as rigid bands of fibrous connective tissue that forms on or below the surface of the skin as a result of injury or surgery. Depending upon us severity and location on or in the body, scar tissue can become troublesome. Scar tissue may begin restricting circulation and lymph flow, movement or function, and can even cause skeletal or other deformities if left unaddressed. Nerve impingement, pain, numbness, muscle atrophy, tissue hypoxia/ischemia, and an increase in potential for future injury may result. Proactive measures for preventing and combating long term complications from scar tissue formation include regular massage therapy treatments, thermotherapy (hydrotherapy), moisturization, nutrient boosting and antiinflammatory diets, and stretching and strengthening of the scar zone and surrounding healthy tissues.
Being conscientious of a clients post injury or surgery status, and current pain or discomfort levels, a massage therapist may employ one or more of the aforementioned techniques. It is important for clients to understand that some scar tissue treatments may be a bit uncomfortable to receive, especially with mature (old) scar tissue. Yet, the benefits of the reduction of unsightly scarring, improvements in range of motion and flexibility, and overall improvement to surrounding tissue or structural health outweighs any discomfort a client might experience in their treatment session.
Be aware that a therapist should always work within a client's individual pain tolerance during the entirety of each treatment (which may vary from session to session). Most importantly, a clients direct, specific, open communication about what they are feeling and experiencing during their treatment session will help ensure the greatest experience and outcome.
