![]() When a hiker gets ready to go on an excursion, they will condition their bodies to bear the heavy load over a period of time. Yet when we get ready to send our students to school, we don't typically think to aid our children for the load they will bear through proper conditioning. With every year students gain bigger homework assignments, bigger books, bigger bookbags and with all this come bigger problems with regards to discomfort, pain and postural distortions. Many students walk long distances all while carrying these heavy loads and at the start of a school year, with postural muscles that have likely atrophied since the previous year, this can be a great tax to their human frame. As guidelines suggest, students should not lift a load heavier than 20% of their bodyweight, yet our experience over the years proves that as books and assignments grow it is often easy to exceed that recommended limit, particularly as students enter high school and college. Depending upon the load that your student is required to bear, it can be critical to ensure that their muscles are properly cared for in order to prevent pain or even long term injury. One of the best ways to aid the body in conditioning is through regular massage, just ask any dedicated athlete. Regular massage - even just a fifteen minute session - can help students transition into their school year and reduce the risk of discomfort, pain, and even long term injury associated with bookbag use. Additionally, ensuring that the physical body is free from aches and pains can help ensure that your student will be able to focus more clearly on the academic aspect of their book load and not just on the physical aspect. If you'd like to help bear the burden, we'd be happy to help you schedule a monthly series of appointments and help your student prevent injury and welcome in the new school year with less stress and tension!
