Backpack safety is an absolute must for both short term and long term health. From simply avoiding bothersome neck pain to preventing life-long myofascial complications (such as possible formation of a scoliotic curvature), it pays to follow the guidelines as presented by the National Safety Council https://www.nsc.org/home-safety/safety-topics/child-safety/backpacks
Remember, it is especially important to avoid single-strap bags, thin-strap/fashion bags, and hand-held bags, all of which can severely distort the spine or compress sensitive nerve bundles near the neck, shoulder, wrist and spine when worn or held under load.
Keep in mind that massage therapy may help prevent and reverse damage caused by cumbersome packs throughout the school year. If you or your child complain about neck, back, hip, shoulder, arm or hand pain, schedule a session sooner rather than later and let us help you weather the school year safely. And, as always, be sure to schedule in time for regular stretching and strengthening which can be of significant benefit for preventing injury too.
We wish you a happy, healthy, and safe 2018-2019 school year!
